| The Automatic Backwash system provides a simple and
permanent solution to the problem of capillary plugging in plate and
frame heat exchangers. Such plugging frequently requires the heat
exchanger to be disassembled and each plate to be scrubbed clean of
adhered or impinged foulants. By backflushing the heat exchanger,
capillary plugging is all but eliminated because no compounding of
foulants is allowed to occur.
The typical WSA Automatic Backwash System has two main components.
- One four-way flow diverter
("X"-style or "H"-style)
- One control panel
|
"X" Style Diverter Valve

|
The four-way flow diverter is installed between the inlet and outlet
cooling water piping of a the heat exchanger. Just as in the application
to a shell and tube heat exchange vessel, at predetermined intervals the
flow to the unit is automatically reversed by the diverter. This full
reversal of the direction of flow ejects foulants on the heat transfer
surfaces and other particulates blocking or restricting flow pathways.
Because it is a completely automated system, prescribed operation and
effect is assured.
